Polyurethane Waterproofing Cape Town

5-Star Reviewed
Home Polyurethane Waterproofing

Polyurethane waterproofing Cape Town covers PU liquid membranes: tougher and considerably more flexible than acrylic, and the usual answer where a surface both moves and gets walked on.

It costs more than acrylic and is worth it in specific situations rather than universally. The category overview is under liquid waterproofing, and services under Waterproofing Cape Town.

Send the area involved and photos of the surface as it stands. That is usually enough to price it.

What PU Is Good At

  • Movement. High elongation, so it bridges hairline cracks and tolerates thermal movement.
  • Foot traffic. Trafficable grades handle balconies, terraces and walkways directly.
  • Complex detailing. Seamless around plinths, pipes and upstands.
  • Wet and dry cycling. Better tolerance of occasional standing water than acrylic.
  • Adhesion range. Bonds to concrete, screed, metal, timber and most sound existing membranes.
  • No open flame. Usable where hot works are prohibited.

Where It Is Usually Specified

ApplicationWhy PU
Balconies and terracesTrafficked, over living space, with movement at the junction to the structure.
Podium and parking decksWith a heavy-duty or wearing-course grade.
Roofs with heavy detailingPlant plinths, ducts and multiple penetrations.
Over existing membranesAs an overlay where compatibility is confirmed.
Wet areasUnder tiles, alongside cementitious as an alternative.

These are indicative market ranges, not a quotation. They are compiled from published South African waterproofing and roofing pricing to give you a starting point for budgeting. They are not the rate card of any company on this platform.

Compare quotes on the system specified, the number of coats, what preparation is included and what the guarantee covers. A rate per square metre means nothing until you know what the rate covers.

Practical Limits

PU is moisture-sensitive during cure. Applied to a damp substrate or in the wrong conditions it foams and blisters, which is the commonest PU failure on site and is an application error rather than a product one.

Most PU also needs a UV-stable top coat where the surface stays exposed. Left uncoated, the membrane chalks and degrades faster than the system life suggests.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is polyurethane more expensive than acrylic?

It is a tougher, more flexible chemistry with far higher elongation and better traffic resistance. On a balcony or deck that moves and gets walked on, that difference is what determines whether it lasts.

Why did my PU coating blister?

Almost always moisture in the substrate during cure. PU reacts with it and foams. That is an application condition problem rather than a product fault, and it means the substrate was not dry enough when it went on.

Is this covered by insurance?

Insurers generally cover sudden damage rather than gradual failure. A system at the end of its life is normally treated as wear and tear, and storm damage is a separate question your policy wording decides.

How many quotes should I get?

Three or more, on the same written brief. Rates vary widely because scope varies widely, and a spread of quotes shows quickly which contractor has actually inspected the job.

How long does the work take?

A domestic-scale job is often two to four days including preparation and curing. Larger or multi-section work runs one to three weeks. Rain stops work entirely.

How long does waterproofing last?

A correctly installed torch-on system generally gives 10 to 15 years. Liquid acrylic runs shorter, often 5 to 8. Both assume outlets are kept clear and the surface is checked once a year.
