Liquid Waterproofing Cape Town

5-Star Reviewed
Home Liquid Waterproofing

Liquid waterproofing Cape Town covers systems applied wet and cured in place, forming a seamless membrane rather than a sheet with joints.

That is the whole advantage: no laps to fail, and detailing around pipes and plinths that a sheet cannot follow. Sheet systems are under bitumen waterproofing. Services sit under Waterproofing Cape Town.

Send the area involved and photos of the surface as it stands. That is usually enough to price it.

Where Liquid Systems Win

  • Complex roofs. Many penetrations, plinths and changes of direction that a sheet cannot be dressed around.
  • No open flame. Usable where hot works are prohibited, near timber, thatch, plant or medical gas.
  • Awkward geometry. Curves, upstands and detailing where sheet laps would concentrate.
  • Overlays. Recoating a sound existing system without stripping, where compatibility allows.
  • Light structures. Adding minimal weight compared with a built-up sheet system.

Choosing Between the Chemistries

ChemistryWhere it fits
AcrylicCheapest, reflective, water-based. Shorter life and less movement tolerance. See acrylic waterproofing.
PolyurethaneTough, flexible, trafficable grades available. Costs more. See polyurethane waterproofing.
CementitiousFor permanently damp substrates, tanking and wet areas. See cementitious waterproofing.
RubberisedElastomeric, high elongation, good over movement. See rubber waterproofing.
Liquid bitumenBituminous emulsions and coatings, often as a primer or a repair rather than the whole system.

These are indicative market ranges, not a quotation. They are compiled from published South African waterproofing and roofing pricing to give you a starting point for budgeting. They are not the rate card of any company on this platform.

Compare quotes on the system specified, the number of coats, what preparation is included and what the guarantee covers. A rate per square metre means nothing until you know what the rate covers.

Compare quotes on what is included, not on the total alone.

What Decides Whether It Lasts

  1. Substrate preparation, which matters more for liquids than for sheet systems.
  2. The correct primer for that substrate, not a generic one.
  3. Reinforcement fabric at junctions, cracks and upstands.
  4. Applied thickness, measured rather than estimated. Thin application is the commonest failure.
  5. Coat count as specified, with proper cure between coats.
  6. A UV-stable top coat where the surface stays exposed.

Thickness Is the Thing to Ask About

A liquid system applied at half the specified thickness looks identical on the day and lasts a fraction as long. Ask how many litres or kilograms per square metre the quote allows, and how that is checked on site. It is the single most useful question on a liquid quote.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is liquid waterproofing as good as torch-on?

For different jobs. Torch-on is thicker and more robust on open flat roofs. Liquid is better on complex roofs with many penetrations, and it is the only option where an open flame is unacceptable.

How thick should a liquid system be?

It depends on the product, but the specification will state a coverage rate. Applied thin, the system looks identical and fails early, so asking how coverage is measured on site is worth doing.

How long does the work take?

A domestic-scale job is often two to four days including preparation and curing. Larger or multi-section work runs one to three weeks. Rain stops work entirely.

How long does waterproofing last?

A correctly installed torch-on system generally gives 10 to 15 years. Liquid acrylic runs shorter, often 5 to 8. Both assume outlets are kept clear and the surface is checked once a year.

When should waterproofing be booked in Cape Town?

Late summer or autumn. Membranes and coatings need a dry substrate and a dry curing window, and contractors fill up as soon as the first winter fronts arrive.

Can waterproofing be applied over the existing coating?

Only where the existing layer is sound, dry and compatible. Coating over a blistered or delaminating membrane traps moisture underneath and the new work fails early.
