Cementitious waterproofing Cape Town covers cement-based slurries brushed or rolled onto masonry and concrete. It is the system used where the substrate is permanently damp, which is exactly where most other systems fail.
It is not a roof coating and does not behave like one. Roof systems sit under liquid waterproofing, and services under Waterproofing Cape Town.
Send the area involved and photos of the surface as it stands. That is usually enough to price it.
Get a QuoteWhy It Suits Damp Substrates
Cementitious systems are mineral-based and bond chemically with the substrate rather than sitting on it as a film. They tolerate application to a damp surface, and they resist water pushing from behind rather than only from the front.
That combination is why it is the standard choice for tanking, water-retaining structures and wet areas, and why it is the wrong choice on a roof that moves and bakes in the sun.
Where It Is Used
| Application | Why cementitious |
|---|---|
| Wet areas under tiles | Bathrooms and showers, with reinforcing tape at every junction. |
| Water tanks and reservoirs | Retaining water rather than excluding it. |
| Swimming pool shells | Beneath marbelite or tiled finishes. See pool waterproofing. |
| Basement and retaining walls | Negative-side tanking where excavation is impractical. |
| Planters and water features | Permanently wet structures. |
| Lift pits and sumps | Below-ground concrete taking groundwater pressure. |

These are indicative market ranges, not a quotation. They are compiled from published South African waterproofing and roofing pricing to give you a starting point for budgeting. They are not the rate card of any company on this platform.
Compare quotes on the system specified, the number of coats, what preparation is included and what the guarantee covers. A rate per square metre means nothing until you know what the rate covers.
Compare quotes on what is included, not on the total alone.
Request QuotesIts Real Limitation
Standard cementitious slurry is rigid. It will not bridge a moving crack, and on a substrate that flexes it cracks with the substrate. Flexible or polymer-modified grades exist and should be specified where any movement is expected. Asking which grade is quoted is worth doing, because the price difference is small and the performance difference is not.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can cementitious waterproofing be used on a roof?
Generally not as a roof membrane. It is rigid, and a roof moves and takes UV. It is used for tanking, wet areas and water-retaining structures where the substrate is damp and stable.
Does the substrate need to be dry?
No, and that is its main advantage. Cementitious systems can be applied to a damp substrate and bond chemically with it, which is why they work where film-forming coatings do not.
How long does waterproofing last?
A correctly installed torch-on system generally gives 10 to 15 years. Liquid acrylic runs shorter, often 5 to 8. Both assume outlets are kept clear and the surface is checked once a year.
When should waterproofing be booked in Cape Town?
Late summer or autumn. Membranes and coatings need a dry substrate and a dry curing window, and contractors fill up as soon as the first winter fronts arrive.
Can waterproofing be applied over the existing coating?
Only where the existing layer is sound, dry and compatible. Coating over a blistered or delaminating membrane traps moisture underneath and the new work fails early.
What should the quote specify?
The measured area, the system and product by name, the number of coats or layers, the preparation included, how upstands and outlets are detailed, access equipment, the guarantee term and the exclusions.
